Knowing your position on rental car insurance before walking into a rental car company is an important factor. Even many of us say yes to rental car insurance when we are offered the same by an agent. But, the way to think is, “Do I really need rental car Insurance?” or “Wouldn’t it be wastage of my money if I choose rental car insurance?” If to speak truthfully, in most of the cases, additional rental insurance is not even necessary.
Before applying for a rental car insurance that may apply to your rental vehicle, most standard auto insurance policies apply the same coverage and deductibles to cars rented for your convenience. It is always better to check again your policy, whether it provides all or most of the benefits that rental car insurance will provide you. Even your credit card company provides you some degree of rental coverage if:
· You are primary renter of the vehicle.
· You have declined the rental collision waiver.
· You pay for the car in full with credit card.
Types of Rental Coverage Offered
Supplemental Liability: If you are at accident with your fault, the insurance company will provide you with $1 million coverage if the other party files a claim for an injury or damage to vehicle. But, if you yourself have an auto insurance policy or an umbrella policy, the coverage will not be necessary.
Damage coverage: If you are the cause for the accident or the vehicle has been stolen or damages then this coverage will cover the loss. But it follows some restrictions:
· If you are driving with excessive speed.
· If you are driving off pavement
· If you are driving under influence.
· If you are driving in no rental car area.
But if you already have a collision policy the damage waiver will copy the policy.
Personal Effects Coverage: If your personal items in the car are damaged in the accident then this policy will provide the coverage.
Personal Accident Insurance: This coverage includes the protection to the drivers and other passengers in the rented vehicle by providing medical benefit. But you have a personal injury protection on your auto insurance policy you do not need it.
But there is no specific answer to the question “Do I need rental car insurance?” But if you need a greater degree of liability protection or you have large amount of valuable items in you car you can opt for additional insurance. But before you contact a rental car company, review your auto insurance policy and visit the website of the company to view the details of insurance products they offer. By initiating these two steps you surely are going to be in safe hand.
